The Little Fish

Flowing stream

Would you rather be a big fish in a little pond, or a little fish in a big pond?

In the little pond you are comfortable,

You know the lay of the land,

 All the other fish

The crabs, the insects, the turtles, the plants

 They are all familiar

 They are all you know

They are all you will ever know

 And nothing will ever change

Unless you swim up that stream to the bigger pond

To that pond with unfamiliar fish

With dangerous reptiles, amphibians, and insects

Trying to harm you and make your life difficult

 They push you off current

 They make you feel small

 You are small

You are a little fish in a big pond

 But that is OK

 As you swim around

As you learn about the land

As you find comfort in such a hostile place

The pond does not seem that big anymore

The dangerous reptiles, amphibians, and insects are no longer threatening

 You have grown

 You have experienced

You have become someone greater than you were before

 Like a big fish

Like a big fish in a big pond

Like a big fish that has seen the world

Not just the crabs, insects, turtles, and plants in the little pond

Aren’t you glad you swam up river?

About the Author ()

One of four, Andrew likes to think that he's the coolest. After all, he's an avid long boarder and ukelele player, an ardent animal lover, and proud owner of a fish tank (he used to have five but then he had to go to college). When Andrew isn't busy watching Discovery Channel, flaunting his brightly colored beanies around campus, or pondering the mysteries of life, he's busy studying biology (his one true love). If this were a perfect world, Andrew would probably live in a hut in the rainforest with monkeys somewhere in Central America.
