Poet: Yu Xiuhua

I love you

living expressly: every day drawing water, cooking, promptly taking medicine

when it’s sunny, putting myself in, like putting out a curl of orange peel

drinking tea in turns: chrysanthemum, jasmine, rose, lemon

these nice items seemingly lead me up the road to spring

so time by time I press down the innermost snow

they cross spotless white to near spring

reading your poems in the tidy courtyard. this world’s affairs

are unfocused like a sudden sparrow, flown by

and time gleams. I am not fit for heartbrokenness

if I mail you a book, I won’t mail you poems

I would mail you a book on plants, and on crops

tell you the difference between Oryza and Echinochloa

tell you about a Echinochloa plant’s apprehensive

spring

Note:

This is a first attempt at translating a poem by Yu Xiuhua, a poet from Hubei province in China. She rose to fame online in 2014 and has since published three books of poetry. Parts of this poem still elude me in English, but I wanted to share this, unvarnished, first.
